Toric Contacts

‘Toric’ is defined as having the form of a torus or part of a torus. Toric lens refers to contact lens that has two different curves instead of one. The lens is used to correct both astigmatism and short- or long- sightedness. It is also know as contacts for astigmatism. If you have astigmatism, your cornea is curved or shaped in a more oblong fashion instead of a circle as it is supposed to be. This causes blurry vision.

Toric colored contact lens is the perfect choice for people with astigmatism because instead of a standard contact lens with a spherical surface, colored contacts with astimatism is shaped like the side of a doughnut (more elongated). This special shape creates different refractive, focus and powers on the vertical and horizontal orientations, giving you crisp and clear vision. Furthermore, colored contacts for astigmatism uses specific meridians to stay in place and improve your visual acuity. Meridians are measured from your pupil out, like a radius in a circle, to specific powers to correct your astigmatism.

  1. Prescription - Hyperopia (farsightedness) or Myopia (nearsightedness)

  3. Axis for the degree of the angle of the cylinder

Here’s a guide on how to read and provide your prescription details for all your contact lenses purchase convenience:

Cylinder (CYL):  A cylinder value is required for contact lenses for astigmatism. It is a negative value and represents any correction for the curvature of the cornea. CYL is required together with AXIS.
AXIS (A/ ACH/ AXIS/ AX):  An axis (between 0° to 180°) describes the exact position of the curvature on the cornea.
Curvature (BC): This is referring to the base curve of the contact lens in millimeters. The curvature of the contact lens determines the shape of your contact lens and the comfort level while wearing the lens because it means how well the lens attaches to your eye. Parameters for BC are between 8 to 10mm.
Dioptres / Sphere (D/dpt./ S/ SPH/ PWR): This is the corrective power of the contact lens. Measured in diopter, the power of your contact lens is indicated with a plus sign (+) for hyperopia (far-sightedness) and a minus sign (-) for myopia (near-sightedness).
Diameter (DIA):  This value indicates the diameter of your contact lens. In another word, the size of your contact lens that covers your cornea. Usually, soft lens comes in the size of between 14mm to 16mm.
Addition (ADD): Addition is the difference between the dioptric value for far vision and near vision. This value is used for multifocal lenses (from 1.00 to 3.00). Those who have a lower value of ADD will find it easier to adapt to
Oculus Dexter (OD): This is your right eye’s parameters.
